Calder Fountain

Next to the Custom House is this beautifully restored Calder Fountain and reputedly Belfast's oldest drinking fountain for horses and cattle. As the inscription states: Erected by public subscription in commemoration of Francis Anderson Calder, Commander RN. Founder of the Belfast Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and for twenty years its active honorary secretary. It’s dated 1839.

This area was close to the old quays and would have had a considerable number of carriers using horses and carts to transport goods to and from the ships. After many years of neglect it was restored as part of the larger regeneration project for this area.
