Maritime buoys in the centre of Cathedral Gardens were a gift from the Commissioner of Irish Lights. They celebrate Belfast’s history with being a sea port and ship building. The park was opened on the 21st of November 1983 by Councillor A Cairns JP and Lord Mayor Councillor Alfred Ferguson.

Cathedral Gardens

Just under the dominating presence of St Anne’s Cathedral and the Ulster University is Cathedral Gardens.

In the centre are these large maritime buoys – a gift from the Commissioner of Irish Lights. They represent the successful days gone by when Belfast had a traditional sea port and ship building city.

The buoys are actually more than seventy years old and are illustrated in vivid pre 1979 lateral system buoyage colours. They are the type used in local waters.

This park was opened on the 21^st of November 1983 by Councillor A Cairns JP in the presence of the Lord Mayor Councillor Alfred Ferguson.

Apart from the buoys there’s nothing else to do here except for taking a little rest and watching the husle busle of students and workers passing by.
