Established in the Teach Ruairí building, Failte Feirste is an office promoting West Belfast and not just the political elements that it’s most known for. Art and environmental issues are also top of the list. They encourage tourists to use local businesses as away to boost the whole community via the internet and traditional ways.

Failte Feirste Thiar

On the corner of the Teach Ruairí building on the Falls road is a little office charged with opening up West Belfast to tourism. Glen Phillips explains briefly what it is Failte Feirste do:

…So, Failte Feirste has the task of promoting West Belfast which, incidentally, includes both Catholic and Protestant areas. This part still suffers from the stigma of violence, however, one of the great advantages to come out of this is that ‘West Belfast is known throughout the world as a hotbed of political invention and a platform for social progress’.  The small team that works in this office are also responsible for producing this local magazine which is distributed throughout Ireland.

It goes into more detail about projects. Local internet businesses are also promoted such as Landnet, Blacktaxitours etc. Another more surprising aspect which even local people are often unaware about are the many environmental issues. Throughout West Belfast are the Bog Meadows, City Parks, Forest Walks including lakes or rivers and special areas for consideration that Failte Feirste promotes. A lot of money is being poured into these projects since these are often the places over looked in cities.

This is the first ever detailed map referred to earlier. The exact location of each mural is shown on one side in coloured detail. Most of them just happen to be off the main Falls and Shankill Roads. The photos though don’t justice to the real thing though since only by visiting them on location is the real significance and history revealed.
