Jaffe Fountain

This fountain constructed in 1874, to honour leading linen merchant Daniel Joseph Jaffé, was only returned here for the opening of the new Victoria Square shopping center. It was originally commissioned by one of Mr Jaffé's sons, Sir Otto Jaffé who would later succeed to the position of Lord Mayor of Belfast. Made by George Smith & Company at the Sun Foundry in Glasgow, the fountain was relocated to Botanic Gardens in 1933 and lay there for almost 70 years in poor condition.

The company Multi Development helped with its restoration in 2007 by an English company called Eura Conservation. Apparently, it had to be painstakingly restored due to its condition and to study its original colours underneath the years of neglect.
