St James’ Memorial
Opposite the Park Centre shops is this Republican memorial plot.
Looking over it is this mural on a gable wall. It depicts two Republican volunteers Francis Liggett and Paddy Brady.
This memorial plot on the corner of St James’ Crescent is only a recent landmark here as it was constructed a short while ago.
This fountain in the middle is dedicated to all those who lost their lives during the Hunger Strike which claimed 10 IRA volunteers in 1981. It was donated by Frank Hearty from Cullyhanna, South Armagh.
Around the edge of the plot on the ground are these small marble plaques with the names of Republicans from this area who died throughout the Troubles. The four coloured marble slabs in the little patches of garden represent each province in Ireland.
Of course, it wasn’t only Republicans who were killed and this next plaque in the corner is dedicated to Jim Carson and Sean Hughes. They were local shop keepers who were shot dead by the British army.
At the top are more marble slabs recalling those IRA personnel and political activists of greater St James’ area who died during the Troubles. A guard of honour is depicted on either side.
On the opposite side is this last marble plaque dedicated to all those civilians who were subsequently killed during the Troubles.
