Victoria Square
Beginning in April 2004, this multi-level shopping mall covering 1.8 hectares was completed in the summer of 2007 at a cost of 400 million pounds. The general design is in the shape of an arcade which for Belfast can make it seem like a wind tunnel during cold, windy spells.
An office tower and Churchill House were demolished to make way for this huge project which uncovered relics from Belfast’s history in the form of an ancient bridge from 1810. This basement area where the artifacts were discovered is now home to a two storey car park.
A contemporary stairway also served by an escalator leads up to the viewing gallery which is where you will find one of the main attractions: this impressive glass dome measuring 35m in diameter and reputedly now the largest of its kind in Europe.
The complex also boasts an environmentally friendly roof made from Sedum which enables it to soak up rainwater allowing it to evaporate naturally over time rather than overload draining systems.
In employment terms, over 3,000 people were involved in the construction phase which includes 98 retail shops, food outlets, a cinema and 106 apartments. The whole project was overseen by Farrans and Gilbert Ash.
