Chiesa di Beata Vergine del Soccorso

Originally there was a church in this area between the old gates of Porta Galliera and Porta Mascarella since 1517. It was built by the architect Domenico Tibaldi for the sole reason to house the venerated wooden statue of the Madonna and child that’s actually known as the Madonna del Soccorso, which translates as Madonna the Protector. The sculpture also went under the name of Madonna del Burgo meaning she was over the city or town.

This chapel on the right is dedicated to all those priests who died during WWII. There are a few paintings on the walls under which are the names of Bolognese priests who were killed.

Every year on the 30th day after Easter the statue is taken outside the church and lead along a procession to the church of San Rocco which is at the western gate of the city. This religious event takes place as a measure of gratitude for her holy intervention in 1527 when a plague was attacking the population. On occasion in the past, this Holy ceremony was unfortunately marred with violent conflict between two powerful clans of the area del Burgo where the church was and the visiting church in del Pratello.

This present structure only dates between 1948-50. The work on it was lead by Luigi Vignali. There was nothing preserved from the previous church because the aerial bombardment in WWII totally destroyed the building as well as having killed the rector Don Arturo Giovanni.

On 8th September 1958 cardinal Giacomo Lercaro elevated its status to a parochial church and also blessed it in 1964.

Behind the main altar here is the revered sculpture of the Madonna and child.
