Ex-church of San Giobbe
Stuck in between various streets is this wonderful little passageway which inside you can find several shops and even a bank. However, this door way dating back to the late 15th century actually leads into the ex church of San Giobbe.
This spot here is the center of the passageway and as such was probably the nave of the church. It’s enriched with art work attributed to Giuseppe Mazza completed in 1683. Looking up on each side of the four walls are more frescoes by unknown artists.
Many of the paintings illustrate scenes or landmarks around Bologna for example, one shows Piazza Maggiore and Piazza di Tribunale. Others celebrate known buildings such as the famous Arco del Meloncello in Via Saragozza.
Part of this building, at number 4, used to house an ancient hospital where the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Guarini stands now. The hospital was also given this name because it stood near to the church of the same name.
When the French troops of Charles VIII arrived in Bologna they brought with them the Gallic disease otherwise known as syphilis and from this point on anyone suffering from the disease was able to seek shelter in this hospital which later took the name of San Giobbe. In 1799 the hospital was amalgamated with Sant’ Orsola hospital a little further away from the town center.
When the church was handed over for civil use Giannino Lambertini was commissioned to decorate the passageway in 1903.
