Immaculate Madonna Statue
In the centre of Piazza Malpighi is this bronze statue of the Immaculate Madonna created by Giovanni Tedeschi in 1638 on the design of Guido Reni. For such a simple piece of construction it seem to require a lot of attention because the slender column was designed by C.F Dotti.
On the 8th of December each year the Bolognese set flowers at the bottom of the column during the holy festival of the Immaculate Conception.
There doesn’t appear to be any information about the three bronze tablets showing coats of arms around the bottom although it may be safely assumed that they represent either Royal or Papal insignia, perhaps even both.
