Piazza Minghetti

Piazza Minghetti was named after Marco Minghetti – a politician who died in 1886.

In 1893 old buildings, some of which were crumbling anyway were demolished to make way for this piazza, one of them being the house where St Catherine of Bologna was born. Another building of important significance here is the Palazzo delle Poste just behind the square, constructed between 1909-1911 by the engineer Emilio Saffi.

This statue dedicated to Mingehtti was the work of Giulio Monteverde in 1896. King Umberto I and Queen Margherita were present during the inauguration of it on the 28th of June of that same year.

In the past too, Piazza Mingehtti was one of the main stops for the old trams that used to run up to San Ruffillo, the last one having departed here on the 3rd of November 1963.
