San Donato Church
This building was erected in 1454 but later renovated and enlarged in 1751. A few years after in 1754 Francesco Orlandi painted the whole facade with delicately ornate decorations.
According to some local sources this was the parish church of Longboard origin which was reported to have been burned down in 1210. The source also points to an Ahrimanic chapel being located here although there’s no additional information to confirm this. As a matter of interest the Ahrimanic Impulse is a religious institution based on the belief that spiritualism is derived from earth – the centre of the earth to be precise, whereas Christian teachings illustrate that this fire and brimstone environment is home to evil.
For this reason then, it’s quite possible that this ancient location may owe its historic origins to some sort of brotherhood or spin-off from a more traditional religious order at the time.
After it was burnt down the building was then rebuilt in 1454 and underwent various changes throughout the centuries.
It ceased to be a parish church in 1805 when it was sold over to private ownership, belonging to the Malvasia family among many others. However, public services were obviously reinstated at some point although it’s not sure when.
The odd seating arrangements showing here by modern wide tables is due to the fact that the poor are able to come here early some mornings and receive food. Once a week mass is also said here in Spanish.
The street in front of the church now called Via Zamboni used to be known as Via San Donato and was one of the main roads in and out of the ancient town of Bologna.
