San Girolamo dell’ Arcoveggio

A church was constructed here in 1338 as a subsidiary Church to San Giuseppe del Borgo di Galliera although there’s virtually nothing else known about its structure. The present bell tower was erected in 1881 and 2 bells made by Antonio Brighenti were added.

This first altar on the right hand side was paid for by the local community in 1854. The canvas displays St Macario and St Michael the Archangel before the Madonna. It’s attributed to Andrea Donducci also known as Il Mastelleta mid 1600s.

Giuseppe Savi was the patron of this second altar showing a painting of St Joseph with the baby Jesus. It dates to 1639 by an unknown artist but was subsequently restored in 1772 by Giuseppe Ghedini.

Under an arch is the entrance into another chapel. This first altar here shows a canvas of Saints Andrea and Donino with the Blessed Virgin above them. The painting was donated by the Fabbri brothers in 1636. To the right of this is an icon of a nun from the Order of St Francesca. She was later blessed as Santa Maria Veridiana Carrabi. Behind the glass case is apparently the chair that she used.

On the other side of the room is another altar with holy statues.

The name of Arcoveggio is derived from this area which in turn has its origins from an ancient arched bridge that used to cross the River Savenna – referred to in Latin as arcum veterem. Due to disuse this bridge was subsequently taken down in the 11th century.

Back at the main altar is where the original 17th century altar and tabernacle were made of wood and gilded in gold. In 1854 the marble altar was constructed by Carlo Vidoni on behalf of Carlo Fornasini. This large canvas shows St Girolamo by Alessandro Guardassoni in the late 19th century.

Under the left hand side is another area for the congregation. At the back wall is this beautiful antique confessional while on the ceiling is a small painting displaying angels. It’s not indicated who the artist was responsible for this painting.

Along the left hand side of the nave is this altar dedicated to the Virgin of Rosary. At the end of the 17th century a painting was in place of the statue. The smaller iconic images around the statue represent the 15 mysteries of the rosary.

In 1567, according to the wishes of Cardinal Paleotti, San Girolamo was to assume the title of parish church under the direction of the Benedictine Order. The medieval building was reconstructed in a neo-classical form around the mid 1800s.

There are quite a few treasures held in the church some having been donated over the years. They include silver and gold chalices, Holy Crosses and garments dating from as early as the 1600s. Unfortunately they are  not on view to the public.
