The Herbarium
In this building next to the Botanical Gardens is the Herbarium museum although strictly speaking it’s not quite a museum but rather an archive for those wishing to study some of the 120,000 dried plants housed here.
On the ground floor is this very small exhibition which is held once in a while. A lack of space means they cannot put on display as much as they would like to.
Information about the history of this herbarium and samples of dried plants are on display. It also covers a brief history of the most famous botanists from the 16th century onwards who greatly influenced its growth such as Ulisse Aldrovandi, Antonio Bertolini, Giuseppe Monti and Ferdinando Bassi.
This book shown here is the oldest collection in the library and was actually classified by Aldrovandi himself in the 16th century. The most complete collection dating back to the 18th century is the work of Monti. This archive therefore is not opened to the public and only for students of botany.
Antonio Bertolini is responsible for this next collection.
It’s one of the biggest in Europe with Florence holding the number one position.
