Via Alamandini Column

Not far from Porta San Mamolo is this almost unnoticeable road. About mid way up on the left is this ancient monument with a cross on top. It’s believed that this marks the location where St Procolo was killed in the year 303 as indicated on the plaque below.

The year 303 was significant because it marked the beginning of religious persecution here and also led to the deaths of Saints Agricola and Vitale. The last date here reads 519 but is inconclusive as to its exact reference.

A few metres from this is a forgotten chapel which had been dedicated to St Procolo. What evidence it existed is only shown here with this centuries old image of the Madonna and Child. It’s also thought that this is where an ancient order of Cenobite’s established a monastery called S.M in Valverde.

Further up this road was also famous at one time for leading to Roman baths and a Roman aqueduct that brought water to the city.
