Casa de la Cultura Benjamin Duarte

Built in 1918 this magnificent building on the corner facing Parque Jose Marti was formerly Palacio de Ferrer. Displaying various shades of blue it is now Casa de la Cultura Benjamin Duarte.

Born in 1900 Benjamin Duarte was a self taught artist who passed away on the 10th July 1974.

At present there is ongoing works to restore the building and up until recently it normally hosted live musical events, dance, and other arts. Mainly though the rooms are used for children’s projects and an arts school.

The palace illustrates a variety of architectural styles. It boasts an unusual viewing tower that visitors can climb up a spiral staircase made from wrought iron and enables visitors to look out over the roofs of the Centro Historico.

The interior is known for the Italian marble floors and decorative aspects on the walls that were cut in Italy before being transported to Cuba.
