Plaza de San Francisco
This square, located close to the harbour is the end of the old 11km long aqueduct, parts of which, can still be found in the city. The end point of the aqueduct is this Fuente de los Leone – the Lions Fountain, which is where ships replaced their fresh water stocks. It was donated to the city by the Count Don Claudio Pinillos de Villanueva. It dates to1836 and is a celebrated work by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Gaggini who created it from Carrara marble. Incidentally, an exact copy of the lions fountain can be found in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain.
#The square takes the shape of a polygon and dates to 1559 when it became the first public market.
