Blasius Trogmann Statue

On the corner of Via Schaffer and Via Roma is this monument in honour of one of Merano’s fighting heroes. Born in 1781, Blasius Trogmann from Mais, joined an ancient tradition to defend Merano and at only 16 years old he fought against Napoleon’s army.

The writing under his statue reads Schützen Hauptmann, showing he was the Captain of his unit. In 1842 Kaiser Ferdinand awarded him and another comrade called Matthias Ladurner gold medals of honour for their long and outstanding bravery on the field to defend Merano. The bear with the coat of arms is also symbolic of this area.
