Chiesa Collegiata
According to the voice of the local populous in 1741 Pope Benedict XIV closed down two smaller churches called St Michael the Archangel and St Agatha and ordered a new and bigger church which would also serve as a college of theology.
The first altar along the right hand aisle displays a 1649 painting by Giovan Francesco Nagli. Beside the altar is an ancient baptism font watched over by a partially destroyed depiction of Jesus Christ being baptized and dating to late 1600s. The second and third altar illustrate art work by Gaetano Mancini, from 1731, showing a baby Jesus at the Temple and a modern statue of the Madonna respectively.
Construction began in 1744 and finished in 1756 although the bell tower was only added in 1937. After the new church was built by an architect from Rimini called Giovan Francesco Buonamici it was subsequently dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Rosary.
Now we arrive at the spacious transept where centre stage is the huge work executed by Giovan Battista Barbiani from Ravenna in 1632. The artistic beauty is enhanced by its baroque style settings. It was donated here by Elena Ferrandi as promised. Next to it is this wonderful tempera Crucifixion dating to 1355 and thought to be from Pietro da Rimini.
To the right of the main altar is this work of art showing St Francis receiving his stigmata. The artist was F. Silva and dates to 1756. Other paintings around the apse here are from 1385 by Jacobello di Bonomo and Guido Cagnacci, 1635.
At the head of the church is Michael the Archangel and St Agatha, work of a Bolognese artist Giovan Gioseffo Dal Sole early 1700s. They are depicted here protecting the city. Under this are 12 stalls of the choir made again from another Bolognese, a carpenter called Giuseppe Gavasini.
On the opposite wing of the transept is a baroque altar dedicated to the Madonna of Rosary.
The crypt which is adjacent is normally locked behind metal gates and designed in a late baroque style. Inside is a 16th century icon of the Virgin unfortunately only displayed at certain times of the year. In the rectory there are apparently many treasures including historic chalices, reliquaries and more works of art.
Proceeding down the left hand aisle now is this first chapel with a 1755 painting of the Madonna and saints Antonio Abate and Antonio da Padova done by the hands of the Bolognese Giuseppe Marchesi otherwise called Sansone.
Before the next chapel is this dark wooden pulpit constructed by Gavasini around the same time as he made the choir in the main altar. The second altar here should actually display Cagnacci’s depiction of St Joseph with the baby Jesus but it’s currently being restored. The last one along displays a beautiful tempera illustration of a priest with the city at his back. Hanging above this marble altar is St Gaetano next to an angel.
Finally, as a measure to raise the internal beauty the renowned organist Gaetano Callido was tasked with embellishing the church with an organ of great splendour. This organ above the entrance portal was placed here in 1779 and fully restored between 1987-1988.
