Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria Hermitage
On a hill over-looking Trinidad is the remains of the oldest religious building. Properly known as Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria Hermitage, it’s also more commonly known as La Popa Hermitage. Some sources attribute its construction as far back as 1700.
The building next to it was supposedly a Spanish military hospital.
The church was served by a single nave, high choir stall and a rectangular presbytery. Some signs of this design can still be made out today albeit with a little imagination.
The church was damaged extensively by a storm in 1812 but it was later said to have been restored.
Due to its obvious advantage over Trinidad French painter Edouard Laplante designed a lithograph from this spot in 1857 and which can be seen in the Architectural Museum today.
