6 Winds Monument

Created in 2005 by the Riminese artist Bruno Militi and the Romani Brothers firm, ‘The Wind Rose’ is composed of 8 stylized cherubs that are inspired by the famous subject of Duccio in the Malatesta Temple, representing the main winds. Fontana Nettuno

Created in 1564 after buildings were demolished for Piazza Nettuno. Water was directed from Remonda in the hills. The masterpiece of the god Neptune was made by Jean Boulogne, better known as Giambolonga and considered by some as an embarrassment due to its nudity. Bronze sirens, dolphins, cherubs, divinities and papal heraldic shields decorate it.

Via Alamandini Column

An ancient column marks the spot where St Procolo died circa 303 and a few steps next to this was a chapel dedicated to his honour. It’s also believed that the ancient order of Cenobite’s founded a monastery here.

Che Guevara Statue

Outside the Provincial HQ, this bronze statue of Che Guevara, probably dating to 1997, is one of the most unique statues of him. He is portrayed holding a child but also many tiny works of art on his body are said to represent various stages of his life. Another one beside this shows a large sculpture recalling the star he wore on his beret.

Piazza Minghetti

The house of St Catherine of Bologna was demolished to make way for Piazza Minghetti in 1893. The central statue of Marco Minghetti was completed by Giulio Monteverde in 1896. Umberto I and Queen Margherita were present during its inauguration. This was also a stop for trams.

St Francis D’Assisi Monument

A bronze monument to the memory of St Francis of Assisi is more than obvious here judging by its very high plinth. The park has no name but one would then assume it must be St Francis Park.

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is located behind the grand cathedral of San Vitale with mosaics worth stopping by for. The body of Galla Placidia is thought not to be here but somewhere in Rome.

Piazza dei Martiri

Piazza dei Martiri is dedicated to those martyrs killed in WWII. Originally called after Umberto I, this piazza has hosted a market since the second half of the 20th century and was also a stop-off point for the corriere. The roundabout boasts a unique feature too, not for the faint hearted.

Parque Jose Marti

Parque José Martí used to be Plaza de las Armas. In 1977 the architect Daniel Tabeada Espiniella added new features. This Urban Historic Centre was deemed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The L’Arco de Triunfo is the most famous monument with others dedicated to the Republic and people like Clotilde Rodríguez López and Antonio Hurtado del Valle.
