Museum of Anthropology

Astronomical museum and observatory tower

This Astronomical museum in via Zamboni is where the first astronomers plied their trade since 1700s. Their many tools and old fashioned equipment eg, wooden telescopes are on show in the various rooms. Not so easy to reach though as there are a few steps to climb however a free personal guide makes the tour quite interesting.

Toy Soldier Museum

The Museo del Soldatino -Toy Soldier Museum, is inside an 18th century villa. It’s a young boy’s dream world with 12,500 toy soldiers displayed in their full glory. The exhibits represent many nations around the world including the Franco-Prussian Wars, Zulu Wars in Africa, Italian Wars for Independence etc. Didactics are also encouraged here.

The Herbarium

On archive here are 120,000 species of dried plants not normally opened to the public. Occasionally on display are small collections. It deals with the collections of Italy’s most famous botanists from the 16th century on, including Ulisse Aldrovandi, Antonio Bertolini, Giuseppe Monti and Ferdinando Bassi.

Edoardo Collamarini designed this building housing G.Ciamician Museological Collection and exquisite wooden library. Also, a collection of scientific instruments, apparatus and samples by the father of photochemistry Giacomo Ciamician. The library contains 28000 volumes including historically rich literature by Ocellus Lucanus, Bacone, Boyle, Newton.

The Crescenzi-Pacinotti Scientific Collection

Established in 1862 this school contains one of the most important scientific instrument collections in Italy. It’s quite small but varied displaying tools from 1800s for physics, mechanics, acoustics, thermodynamics, meteorology, optics, and electromagnetism. The strong reputation of this school was not doubt helped by Pacinotti and Righi.

Cineteca + Via Riva Reno

At one time a canal this street now called Via Riva Reno is home to a world renowned center, Cineteca, for preserving and restoring films. The buildings housed a monastery, then a slaughterhouse and tobacco factory. It was renovated after WWII. A small park is behind the buildings. Footage includes an exhibition of the area.
