St Anthony of Padova

This tiny chapel in the corner of Piazza Tre Martiri is dedicated to St Anthony of Padova. It was built in the early 1500’s to commerate a miracle in which a hungry mule revered a consecrated host. Chiesa Evangelica Metodista

Established in 1863 by a clandestine pastor from Florence. Methodists only began to receive public support around 1871 and shortly after began to use buildings around Bologna for their services. They moved to this present church in 1885 where they also hold cultural and social events under their present pastor Sergio Ribet.

St Joseph’s Church

Land for St Josephs was donated by Protestant landowner John Mc Crance helped Fr Hugh Mc Donnell build a church here in 1797 but replaced 30 years later by the one partially there now. The bell tower followed in 1871, a grotto during the Marian Year in early 1950’s, a new parish center in 2003.

Duomo di Santa Croce

The origins of Duomo di Santa Croce, Holy Cross Cathedral, goes back to XII century. The neoclassical aspect was the result of modifications in 1841 by Giulio Zambianchi and after damage during WWII. Museum and spectacular works of art await inside eg, a rare XV century Xylography, ancient frescoes and sculptures by masters and even local artists.

San Procolo Church

Erected over many centuries from 1087. People who worked to enlarge it and restore the church included Morandi and Formigine in1535 then Domenico Tibaldi. Many artists contributed: Cesi, Torregiani, Predetti, Bibiena, Scandellari, Cignani Giovannini. Contains the relics of St Procolo in a famous ark where an ancient and holy story unfolds.

St Patrick’s Church

Built 1874-77 by Timothy Hevey and Mortimer Thompson modelled on SS. Augustine & John on Thomas Street in Dublin. Neill Pearse (son of Patrick Pearse) carved St Patrick statue and the high altar. Behind a glass wall are 3 paintings by the renowned society painter Sir John Lavery. Reopened in 1997 after a fire in 1995.

Chiesa Santa Caterina di Strada Maggiore

Origins of this church go back to 12th century. Reconstruction in 1600s by Fiorini transformed it and again in 1832 by Gasparini. Ancient and beautiful art work inside is attributed to Gessi, Calvi, Dardini, Gandolfi, Guardassoni and Baldi. The monastery was also used as a poor house.

Tempio Malatestiano

Tempio Malatestinio is a 13th century temple built by Sigismondo Malatesta that still confounds modern scholars as to what it was meant to serve. It wasn’t a Catholic church judging by the lack of anything Christian about it although used as Rimini’s cathedral since 1809. Sculptural reliefs by Agostino are among the greatest works of the Renaissance.

Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross catholic Church is reputedly one of the best ecclesiastical buildings in Ireland. The monastery sprung up 1877 followed 20 years later by the church. The frescoes inside were painted by one of their clergy.

Santa Maria del Suffragio

Built mid 1900s by Bettazzi and Gaspari. The Dhoniani Order was entrusted with looking after the new church. It’s perhaps too ugly and spacious for its own good. Inside is quite plain. Unusually though the crypt is shared with Ukrainian Orthodox who also celebrate mass here. The complex includes community rooms and a cinema.
