This road which probably takes it name ‘observance’ from the high viewing point over Bologna leads to the church San Paolo in Monte. An imposing cross marks the spot where an annual march to the top celebrates the Madonna del Monte. On the way there are 14 stations of the cross for the religious ceremony that accompanies the march.

Certosa Cemetery

Established 1801 Certosa cemetery boasts one of the most influential and renowned art ‘museums’ in Europe. For the noble and bourgeois Bolognese this Holy ground has been witness to master artists and sculptors since it opened. Neo classical monuments have also been built on an ancient Etruscan necropolis proving further how important this place is.

Chiesa del Corpus Domini

A female monastery founded by Saint Caterina De Vigri, built 1477-1480 by Marchionne and Fucci. It has a well preserved Renaissance facade boasting elegant terracotta reliefs. Tombs of Luigi Galvani and Laura Bassi inside. Saint Caterina’s body is in a little ornate chapel. Artists work by Franceschini, Carracci, Haffner, Mazza.

In Via Manzoni opposite the Medieval Musuem. Founded early 1300s. Beautiful sculptures of sandstone adorn the façade. Full of beautiful statues, paintings and colourful stained-glass windows. Bibbieno restored the nave and altar in 1750. Frescoes are by the Marquises, Francisco Albani and Marcantonio Franceschino.

This parish existed since early 1900s but the church was only erected 1967 and blessed by Cardinal Antonio Poma. Bell tower was added 1989. The contemporary design blends in with its surroundings. Internally is quite warm looking with art work and a marble altar breaking up the hard lined surfaces. A sculpture by Giulio Albornozzi dates to 1700.

Chiesa di Beata Vergine del Soccorso

Originally built in 1517 but totally destroyed in WWII. Vignali built the present one that houses the venerated Madonna and Child which in the past was also at the center of two warring clans. Currently this building is not particularly artistic inside and is somewhat cold however, there are some interesting works of art.

Established in 1961 in a temporary garage. After various changes to architectural designs by Luciano Lullini the church was built between 1963-73 and consecrated by Cardinal Poma in 1974. It’s a modern structure with many unorthodox features eg, no symmetry to the design, unusual seating, shared space with community and school. Art work is scarce.

First established in the year 990 close to the River Ravone. The present church built amid controversy was designed by Ceri 1899-1904. The parish priest Don Giuseppe Palmieri was instrumental in raising funds. Most art work inside dates to mid-late 1900s but there’s a large Crucifixion from late 1600s. Chapels were decorated by local professors.

Carmelite church from 1217 with renaissance chapels decorated in polychrome and white marble. Masterpieces and sculptures littler the church dating from 1400s. Artists who contributed include: Gennari, Rizzi, Francia, Aspertini, Uccello, Carracci, Costa, Tiarini, Tibaldi, Reni, Falcetti, Calvart, Carracci, Manzini. Views also of a rustic cloister.

Present church built from 1624 by Sebastian Fiorini. Late 1700s Marchesini enlarged it and consecrated by Cardinal Prelà 1858. Works of art include precious paintings from 1600s on by Samacchini,Gennari, Pedrini, Varotti, Guardassoni, Fransceshini; also sculptors Vidoni, Bertelli, Zambrini. A statue of Virgin inside attributed to miracles in 1630.
