Chiesetta di San Giovannino

Established by ancient Order called Confraternita di San Girolamo early 1600’s. The little chapel was part of a larger complex later destroyed during WWII. Valuable art work inside by G.B. Costa and Cesare Pronti’s 26 black and white paintings with Latin inscriptions by Giovan Antonio Spiritelli. Small but cosy to stop off for a visit.

Madonna della Scala

Built in 1617 beside Porta Gervasona on alms raised by sailors. Madonna della Scala was erected due to a miraculous event when a sailor was saved from drowning after praying to an image of the Madonna. Alessandro Codrini painted a famous fresco above the altar in 1680. It’s been restored several times also thanks to Vincenzo Roberto Pasquini.

First Presbyterian Church

Belfast’s oldest surviving church. First Presbyterian Church dates to 1783. Inside are intricate wooden carvings, traditional pews, ancient pulpit that John Wesley preached from, stain glass, sculptures. As impressive are the politicians, radicals, leading businessmen and scholars who attended here. This is a living museum like no other in Belfast.

Crescent Church

Constructed between 1885-1887 and designed by the prolific Glasgow architect John Bennie Wilson. It’s a robust looking building with an unusual bell tower with an open belfry stage. Costing £8000, it was to house an expanding Presbyterian congregation from Linenhall Street. Interesting features include a tall organ and stain glass windows.

Fisherwick Presbyterian Church

Fisherwick Presbyterian Church is a neo-Gothic building designed by the architect S.P. Close. The original congregation moved here from Fisherwick Place. Rev. James Morgan was the first minister in 1923. Boasts splendid stain glass windows by W.F. Clokey, an organ by .W. Walker & Sons dating to 1901, art works by Helen Sanlon.

San Bartolomeo di Reno

San Bartolomeo di Reno was built upon an oratory in 1204. Also known as Madonna della Pioggia in reference to a miraculous intervention in 1561. It suffered from years of neglect and was twice restored in 1536, 1730. Ancient frescoes and art by: F.M. Zanotti, Filippo Pasqualini, Antonio Crespi, Francesco Monti, Ercole Graziani, Lorenzo Sabbatini.
