Established 1801 Certosa cemetery boasts one of the most influential and renowned art ‘museums’ in Europe. For the noble and bourgeois Bolognese this Holy ground has been witness to master artists and sculptors since it opened. Neo classical monuments have also been built on an ancient Etruscan necropolis proving further how important this place is.

Construction began in 1334 but only blessed in 1367 when the Carthusian Order took responsibility for it. Martelli built the larger bell tower 1608. After the suppression in 1798 many images of Mary were brought here creating a source of beauty and illustrious art. Other VIP works from 1500s on are by Cesi, Bibiena, Pasinelli, Carracci, Vivarini.
