Erected 1854-1857 and designed by Charles Lanyon and WH Lynn. An Italianate styled building made from Scottish sandstone upon wooden piles. Subsequent restorations mean it will no longer subside. A magnificent sculpture by Thomas Fitzpatrick above the main entrance of Britannia, Neptune and Mercury. Gareth Knowles created The Speaker on the steps.
