About Bank of Ireland

This is a fabulous Art Deco building belonging to the Bank Of Ireland. Originally built between 1928-30, the branch of the bank is characterised by typical Art Deco style. A tower and clock are the most distinctive feature here  but there are also decorative metal panels between the windows. An Irish builder at the time described it during the official launch as “the best modern building in Belfast”.

It’s steel frame and clad in Portland Stone was designed by Dublin architects McDonnell, Dixon and Downes and claims to be the first art deco building in Ulster. It’s surprisingly small inside and was mainly used as office space.

It’s strategically located along Royal Avenue but in 2007 the bank closed and is presently lying empty.
