Belfast Divis Tower
About Divis Tower
At 61m tall, Divis Tower is currently the sixth tallest building in Belfast. Built in 1966 it was named after the nearby Divis Mountains. There was a whole complex built at the time and with the exceptions of this one the rest were demolished and replaced by modern housing.
This plaque on the corner of the building is dedicated to Patrick Rooney aged 9 and Hugh McCabe aged 20, who murdered here by the RUC on 15th August 1969.
For many years during The Troubles a British Army spy post was mounted on the top two floors with cameras aimed at the surrounding Nationalist areas.
In 1981, a British Army sniper killed INLA member Emmanuel McClarnon from the top of Divis Tower, on the night Francis Hughes died on hunger strike.
The army post was subsequently removed in August 2005 as part of the events leading to the IRA ending its armed campaign.
