Belfast Monument to the Unknown Worker
About Monument to the Unknown Worker
At the foot of the Great Northern Mall are these two inspirational mother-like figures. The artist Louise Walsh created the life sized female sculptures from Bronze and called it the Monument to the Unknown Worker. It’s a clear homage to women and further highlights the underlying issues of their low-paid jobs and unpaid housework.
The art work was originally commissioned by the Dept of the Environment for Northern Ireland but was then taken over by Glenbank Estates Limited due to a disagreement with the interpretation of the project.
The sculptures are portrayed with everyday objects and utensils from the home imbedded to their clothes. Items such as brushes, telephones, hangers, shopping baskets and so forth. It’s a contemporary piece that screams volumes about women’s roles at home. Imbedded clippings from the news also illustrate how times have changed as women gained more rights yet news headlines seem to be content with scaremongering and imposing negative stereo-types.
