About Thomas Thompson Memorial Fountain

This unusual drinking fountain is actually called the Thomas Thompson Memorial Fountain. It’s located at the intersection between Ormeau Avenue and Bedford Street, directly opposite the BBC headquarters in Belfast. The inscribed words read: “Whosoever drinketh the water that I shall give him…shall never thirst again”.

Erected in 1985 this red Aberdeen granite fountain is quite recent however it’s artistic decoration is gothic in style and admittedly makes it quite unusual for its period although it’s perhaps more to do with the historic personality at the centre of this monument.

Thomas Thompson was a navel surgeon in the Napoleonic Wars who was also distinguished in the line of duty. Many years later though he was touched by the horrors inflicted on people during the Great Famine. As people poured into Belfast appalling conditions soon encouraged devastating epidemics of typhus, cholera, smallpox, and dysentery. As a consequence Thompson founded the Charitable Home for the Incurable which provided comfort for those sick and dying.
