The sign here reads Sacra Regina meaning Holy Queen and also displays a crown above the letters SR. It’s an ancient statue sitting atop a very high column of stone on the parvis of Piazza San Martino. The sculpture is dedicated to the Beata Vergine del Carmelo. Andrea Ferreri was responsible for its completion in 1705. He was born in Milan in 1673 but moved to Bologna at the age of 10. His artistic talent came about after choosing to study design and sculpture as well as having worked under other Bolognese masters. There are about 4 or 5 other works of his around Bologna. In 2000 it was restored at the cost of a local bank.
