Bologna Monument to Giosue Carducci
About Monument to Giosue Carducci
Overlooking Piazza Giosuè Carducci and next to the house where he moved in 1890, is this wonderful little garden built upon steps. The centre piece of course is an even greater sight to cast your eyes upon.
This first lower group on the left side is said to depict Carducci consorting with nature while a faun plays “la sinfonia eterna delle solitudini piene di vita”. Unfortunately, the faun appears to have been damaged.
The next work of art is a huge triptych and represents early works of the poet from “Juvenilia” to the “Barbarian Odes”, and the search for a stanza and patriotic poetry.
Shortly after Carducci’s death Queen Marguerite donated the house and this garden to the local commune so they could dedicate a museum in his honour. Incidentally, the garden also abuts the old city walls located just behind and to the side here.
Each masterpiece was executed by Leonardo Bistolfi, and sculpted from Carrara marble in Liberty style.
Just in front of the triptych is the powerful figure of Carducci sitting in a contemplative pose.
Although it was completed shortly after Carducci died in 1907 the monument was only inaugurated in 1928.
The group on the far right with the horse symbolizes ‘Sauro destrier della canzone’, sitting astride ‘Liberty’ and supporting ‘Rhythm and Rhyme.’
