Palazzetto dello Sport

After WWII it was decided that Bologna needed a sports arena. Previously, the Sala Borsa in Piazza Maggiore was used but it was quite obvious that with an expanding population this building was too restrictive for an increase in spectators. Furthermore, this was the location of the old Hospital Maggiore until it was bombed during the war.

The idea for the domed roof was the design of Giulio Onesti. So, in September 1956 the Mayor Giuseppe Dozza officiated at the opening of the Palazzeto dello Sport. Due to his intervention to get the project of the ground and the fact he was the first Mayor after the war it was dedicated in his honour. Therefore over time it also became known as the Paladozza.

For the most part it hosts Basketball games although it has also catered to boxing fights and even musical events.

In particular this sports arena calls to mind various sporting legends who over the years helped to make it successful such as: Canna, Lombardi, Orlandi, Villalta, Brunamonti, Myers and Basile.
