Constructed by Giuseppe Mengoni over a five year period from 1867. Made from high quality materials like variegated marble with iron and cast iron trimming, this boasts majestic form both inside as well as out. Art work by L. Samoggia, A. Colombarini, G. Pacchioni and G. Galletti, Bertuzi, Lodi, Beccadelli, Guercino, Crespi, Carracci, Creti.

About Palazzo della Cassa di Risparmio

In 1861 a medieval building that was home to St Catherine, was demolished to make way for this immediate area which also includes the Post office behind this palazzo and Piazza Minghetti.

Officially referred to as the ‘Palazzo di residenza della Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna’, the commission of this majestic building was handed to one of the protagonists of Italian Eclecticism, Giuseppe Mengoni. In less than five years the Cassa di Risparmio headquarters was constructed from high quality materials such as variegated marble with iron and cast iron trimming. Several renovations and improvements were carried out in the 130 years of activity of the banking institute founded in 1837 by the Marquis Carlo Bevilaqua.

Some internal characteristics of the building include a magnificent staircase leading to the piano nobile, splendid marble vases by Ferdinando Amadori, a library with elegant stucco decoration on the ceiling and a trompe l’oeil decoration by Luigi Samoggia. Other works of art on display were by Bertuzi, Lodi, Beccadelli, Guercino, Crespi, Carracci and Creti among many others.
