About San Pietro Crypt
San Pietro Crypt
To the right and behind the main altar of the church is a door normally locked by iron gates which, leads down to the crypt. Only on certain occasions is it open to the public. On the wall are these Istrian pieces of stone fragments from the middle of the 12th century. They were part of the doors from the workshop of Pietro Di Alberico.
This chapel holds the reliquaries of Saints Vitale and Agricola and according to the wishes of Cardinal Archbishop Giacomo Lercaro and at his own expense he wanted it renovated in accordance with the II Vatican Council.
There are 5 chapels down here although much less illustrious than those in the main church. Stone fragments and a few restored frescoes are on display.
To really discover the original cathedral constructed in the 10th century it’s here you need to look because it’s from these foundations and closed doors that hold the secrets to this building. On top of which there are many bodies entombed here from Cardinals, archbishops, priests and even the odd gentry.
Just above the crypt in the main church is a room now transformed into a museum. It holds many ancient and particular religious articles most notably from the Blessed Nicolò Albergati and Pope Gregory XV. Presently though it’s closed for renovations.
