Built 1614 for the secular movement of San Rocco. The building had to be restored after WWII but as can be seen now this oratory holds one of Bologna’s great works of art illustrating the life of San Rocco. Many artists played in a part in this especially Barbieri, Colonna, Carraci and Gessi. It’s now the Bolognese Cultural Lyrical Group.

About San Rocco Oratory

Above the church of San Rocco is this magnificent Oratory which was built in 1614. This oratory became the official seat for the secular movement of San Rocco whose origins in fact are traced back to the end of the 15th century. Due to bomb damage suffered in WWII the whole building needed serious restoration work.

The church below has still been neglected somewhat whereas this room has obviously been restored with extreme care and devotion. It’s now in private hands and is the seat for the Bolognese Cultural Lyrical Group. Events, particularly opera are staged here on a regular basis.

Around the room is one of Bologna’s greatest art treasures. Appearing on the ceiling and walls are work from the Bolognese school dating from the 17th century including Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, Angelo Michele Colonna, Giovanni Francesco Gessi,  Curti, Valesio, Provaglia, Desani, Cavendoni, Carraci, Massari. Many of the paintings illustrate the story and life of San Rocco.
