About The Maratona Tower

The Maratona Tower

Behind this building is the grounds of Bologna Football Club, however, it was at one time also the symbolic grounds for fascist learning and referred to as the Littoriale – the name being derived from the ancient Roman term ‘fascio littorio’ symbolising power and authority.

Leandro Arpinati commissioned the building of this imposing tower on behalf of the sports arena but for the Fascists it was simply a statement to show off their political might and flaunt their power.

The tower called Maratona was erected in 1928 by Giulio Ulisse Arata.

Following the fall of fascism a huge, bronze, equestrian statue of Mussolini which was probably on top of the tower was taken down. Building plans including two swimming pools and extra sporting facilities were then set in motion to expand the complex.
