About Via Croce di Camaldoli

This particular monument is a bit of a mystery since nobody seems to know what it represented in the past.

There are a few clues however, the first one being that this road called Croce di Camaldoli used to be part of a huge estate where the Camoldese monks established a convent circa 1245 and which was also purchased by Annibale Marescotti in 1616.

The first date inscribed here is 1450 so it’s possible that this cross was placed here to mark their territory. Other inscriptions below refer to Lodovico Lodovisi who was the Cardinal-Nephew of Pope Gregory XV. The writing further reveals he was the vice-Chancelor of the Holy Roman Church between 1623-1632.

Finally, the bottom inscription refers to WWII. It’s possible that this was restored in 1957, in honour of Jacobo Lercaro, Archbishop of Bologna.
