Bologna Villa delle Rose 2

Inside this 19th century villa now turned into a temporary art gallery for contemporary works. The Commune shares it among many galleries in Bologna so there can often be a great selection of art on display. The inside itself has nothing to offer except for 4 ceiling paintings which lack information on their origins.

About Villa delle Rose 2

Villa delle Rose part 2

The inside of the villa is rather surgical like and uninviting. True, it’s now a temporary art gallery but in this late 19th century building there is virtually nothing of any historic sense or architecturally to see with the obvious exception for these frescoes on the ceiling.

There are four in total, three of which happen to be of women while the third last is of a man on horseback. They have been painstakingly restored as the villa had been lived in since the late 1800s by many noble families and towards the end even a general.

Around each one are smaller iconic paintings most of them appearing to be angelic figures with musical instruments at hand. There is no explanation for the frescoes, the period when they were painted or by whom.

In 1916 Nerina Armandi de’ Piccoli, the last resident here bequeathed it to Bologna to be used as a Modern Art Gallery. Not too long ago it was redecorated once again which is why it looks characteristically clinical.

The local Commune of Bologna uses the premises sparingly for exhibitions of contemporary art which is why at present it is open to the public.

On display on the ground level and upstairs are a number of art works from various galleries around Bologna. They try to include as many galleries as possible therefore only allowing a short period of time before a work of art is replaced.

At either end of the hall way are views of Via Saragozza to the front while at the back is the park and gardens.
