Crossnacreevy George Best Grave
About George Best Grave
Situated near the little town of Crossnacreevy, Roselawn Cemetery is Belfast`s principal municipal cemetery and opened for burials in 1954. The name Roselawn comes from the site`s open lawn style and the roses planted along the cemetery`s main driveway.
Until recently though few outside of Belfast would have ever heard of Roselawn. On the 25th November 2005 George Best died and was interred here on Saturday 3rd December. He was arguably one of the world’s greatest football players of his era and although actually played very few games he nevertheless made such an impression on the world stage that up to 100,000 people attended his funeral.
He lies here in a private family plot along with his mother Annie who died in 1978. Strangely enough, the man who spotted Best is supposedly buried in this cemetery too.
Many visitors arrive each week to visit this grave and the first thing that surely strikes most is the simple headstone that marks this bigger than life footballing hero. However, this decision was taken as private family matter and perhaps justly so since it was a long time ago that George Best left Belfast to pursue his boyhood dreams to play for Manchester United. Now that he has returned he is once more reunited with his family.
