About The Skynners’ Almhouses
At the northern end of Bancroft Road is this neat row of terraced houses called the Skynners’ Almshouses. They are named after their founder Ralph Skynner who left 800 pounds after his death in 1697 for their construction.
Above one of the doorways one of the memorial tablets dedicated in his honour and which was recently restored states that they were built explicitly to house the poor. However, it’s not known whether this tradition of housing the poor here still exists today.
Once lush green fields at the back of the houses has now been replaced by a modern supermarket.
